In using any electrical tools and component, it is important to take cautions on the danger of electrical current when not properly used. A small amount of electrical current can be fatal and even deadly. Electrocution is one of the highest causes of industrial fatalities, where the current from a 7.5-watt, 120-volt lamp, passing across the chest, is enough to cause fatal electrocution. Therefore, it is important to learn about the proper use of extension cords to raise your awareness of extension cord hazards and how to prevent them. Keep slack in flexible cords to prevent tension on electrical terminals.
All mechanical equipments deteriorate with use over time, whether in the workplace or at home. The deterioration presents more exposure to potentially damaged or defective equipment, which will be dangerous. It is advised to regularly examine power cords and plugs before using them to avoid unwanted power failure. Generally we use extension cords to extend a power supply, however they can be dangerous if not applied properly. Before making sure the plug is securely attached to cable, check the cord and plug whether they are damaged, crack, or loose. Make sure there are no indications of overheating or burning, especially on the plug. Keep slack in flexible cords to prevent tension on electrical terminals, grasp the plug instead of cord, when unplugging from an outlet. Avoid plugging many extension cords in one plug.
If you suspect the equipment may be energized, isolate the area to alert personnel and keep them clear of the potential hazard. If you are not sure of the situation, notify your supervisor or technician immediately. Prevent anybody to touch or handle damaged electrical equipment before technician arrived.
